911 Callers Describe Deadly Wrong-Way I-95 Motorcycle Crash

MIAMI (CBSMiami) — Miami Police released the 911 calls from a deadly wrong-way wreck over the weekend.

Drivers called in as they witnessed and drove by the wreck on Interstate 95 just north of the Dolphin Expressway Saturday evening.

911: Is anyone pinned in the car?  

Caller: Yes, she is getting out now, but the guy is stuck in there.

911: Can you see the motorcyclist?

Caller: No, he is gone, he went into the backseat… he is inside the car, he is crushed. I don't think he is alive.

Drivers were frantically calling for paramedics as they shed light on what happened that led up to the deadly crash.

Caller: It looks like a motorcycle, a two-car accident, I just drove by it's terrible, send fire rescue.

Caller: Apparently there was a car going against traffic in the express lane going in the shoulder lane and a car just hit him head-on, like face-to-face, it looks like a major trauma.

Caller: The car was going against traffic and the truck was traveling on the express lane.

Florida Highway Patrol said a Fort Lauderdale man and motorcyclist, Norman Mello, 41, was hit head-on by Carissa Vargas, 20, who was driving a 2013 Acura.

Investigators said Vargas was heading north in the southbound lanes of I-95.

In the accident, FHP said Carlos Pereira, 61, who was driving a Dodge Ram in the same lane as Vargas, but heading south, spotted Vargas' car and swerved to try to avoid a head-on-collision.

However, FHP said Pereira ended up getting sideswiped on the left side by Vargas' car.

Investigators said Mello came through the windshield of Vargas' car and was pinned into the back seat of Vargas' car.

Crews later pronounced Mello dead at the scene. Pereira suffered minor injuries in the crash.

The crash shut down part of Interstate 95 leaving drivers in traffic for several hours.

Mello's friends and family are organizing a memorial motorcycle ride to Mello on Friday night.

Riders will gather at the Tower Shops in Davie for a weekly car show that Mello where was a fixture and ride to Fort Lauderdale Beach -- a ride Aronow said Mello and his friends made more times than they can count.
