'I Heard Pop, Pop, Pop And Ducked Low': Witness Recalls Drive-By Shooting Leaving 4 Hospitalized, Including 2 Young Children
MIAMI (CBSMiami) – Four people, including two children, were shot in northwest Miami-Dade on Monday night.
Police said the shooting happened just before 6 p.m. near NW 151 St. and NW 2 Ave.
Investigators said someone drove up to the group outside of a home and starting shooting at them.
"A subject drove up in a black sedan, open fire into a large crowd, got back into the vehicle and fled the scene," said Miami-Dade Detective Khristopher Welch.
One of those young victims is a 3-year-old girl. The other is a 6-year-old boy.
Reginald Jean, a witness, said the girl was grazed in the leg and the boy was wounded in the back.
"The little boy was hit in the neck and the girl was grazed in the legs. All of a sudden I heard 'pop, pop, pop' and I ducked low. The little boy was sleeping in this car. I just feel this has to stop. These are young people who are not going to school. They have no education. They have no money. They are just trying to get fast money."
CBS4's Peter D'Oench spoke with a woman who said she was the aunt of the two young victims. She did not give her name but when asked about how they are doing, she replied, "They are okay. They are okay."
A green Kia Soul outside the home provides a sobering image. It has at least 10 bullet holes in it from the drive-by.
The adult victims were two males, ages 22 and 21. Police say the conditions of all of the victims have stabilized at the hospital.
Miami-Dade police said three of the injured are related.
Miami-Dade police said they're trying to determine if the wounded men knew their attacker.
It's not known what the motive is and who was being targeted. Police do not have a good description to release right now of the shooter. They have been scouring the neighborhood for Ring doorbell video and surveillance tape.
"We are going to be requesting the assistance of the community in reference to providing information to this incident. We should be outraged, this is a heinous crime. This a family-oriented community. There's an elementary school not more than 15 minutes away from this community. We are going to be requesting the assistance of this community," said Welch. "We are confident in the community. If they saw something, they are able to say something."
Anyone with information that can help the police is urged to call Miami-Dade Crime Stoppers at (305) 471-TIPS.
