1 dead, 1 wounded in SW Miami-Dade overnight shooting

MIAMI - Miami-Dade Police say an 18-year-old man lost his life outside a Southwest Miami-Dade home early Friday after an exchange of gunfire with his step-father.

It happened at 12:28 a.m. on a swale outside the home at 26204 S.W. 128th Court after an argument, according to Miami-Dade Police. They say the teenager pulled out his weapon and then his step-father did the same thing and they fired at each other.

Police say the teenager was taken to Jackson Memorial Hospital but did not survive and his 17-year-old girlfriend was taken to HCA Florida Kendall Hospital where her condition has stabilized. The step-father was not wounded.

Police say he was initially detained and then released. No charges were filed but this is an open investigation.

It's not clear how the three people were connected to the home.

That's where someone at the home told CBS4's Peter D'Oench "We would like some privacy. And as I said to other people before, we wished it never happened."

Police say it's not clear if a black sedan that crashed into a fence nearby at 12824 S.W. 263rd Terrace was connected to the crime.

Neighbor Ailis Llanes said, "This was very sad, very sad. They were kids. I just heard a couple of shots and my dog went crazy. In my neighborhood, this was very scary. Very scary. We bought our house three years ago and nothing like this has happened before."

Nearby, William Walker, who has lived in the neighborhood for nearly 50 years, said, "For people who say gunshots sound like firecrackers gunshots sound like gunshots. At first I heard one shot and then after a minute or two, I heard 5 or 6 shots. I heard the first gunshot because I was up watching TV at the time."

Coincidentally, Walker has a shot spotter device on his home that detects the sounds of gunfire.
