Homes: What you can buy for $1.5 million
The number of homes worth more than $1 million is rising.
In San Francisco, one of the country's most expensive real estate markets, about 58 percent of them are worth that much or more, according to real estate website Trulia.
In most parts of the country, however, million-dollar homes aren't the norm. The current U.S. median home value is $182,500, according to Zillow.
At about eight times that price, some $1.5 million homes offer uncommon amenities, such as sweeping ocean views, grand ballrooms, built-in wine coolers and private spas.
But the amount of space you can get for $1.5 million varies a lot depending on where you're looking. In Indiana, you can buy a 13,100-square-foot home with not one but two swimming pools and a tennis court, while in Brooklyn, New York, that amount will get you 1,430 square feet and in-unit laundry.

Hilo, Hawaii
Located on Hawaii's largest island, this five-bedroom, six-bathroom home overlooking Hilo Harbor is on the market for about $1.5 million. It last sold in January 2004 for $775,000, just over half of the current asking price. The house is about five times as expensive as the median home value in the area, which is currently $286,000, according to Zillow.
