In what has become a monthly tradition, the State Department released a batch of Hillary Clinton's emails from her private server on Friday -- the first since Clinton testified last week before the House select committee investigating the deadly 2012 attack on a U.S. compound in Benghazi, Libya.

The latest release contained over 7,000 pages of emails with about 200 to 300 of those emails marked as classified.

The following seven emails give a glimpse of then-Secretary Clinton's day-to-day professional life, standing out less for their policy implications than for their quirky insight into the presidential candidate.

Smiley faces

Philippe Reines, a senior adviser to Hillary Clinton, apologized profusely to her for being late, writing on April 3, 2012, "I'm very very sorry for keeping you waiting, I know it's your least favorite pastime. ENTIRELY my fault for not playing it much safer in case the time shifted. After all these years, I know better."

Clinton's response: "Here's my question: on this new berry can I get smiley faces?"

Reines sent her a brief tutorial on how to yell at him by emoticon, writing, "For email, no, I don't think so - you need to type them out manually like :) for happy, or :-|| if you want to express anger at my tardiness.

"For test messaging, the chart might be there in the lower right, next to where you type the message.

"If it's not, I THINK that if you type :) it MIGHT automatically convert into a symbol. Try it."

"How does this work?" she asked.

Since that Feb. 1, 2012, email, Clinton joined LinkedIn, listing her current position as 2016 presidential candidate.

Sandberg wrote, "On the debate on the 'ambition gap', you summarized more clearly what I am trying to say than anyone has by far. You are exactly right."

And Sandberg went on to say, "the highlight of my last few weeks was not the filing of our S-1 [for Facebook's IPO], but the invitation to have dinner with you."

Clinton thanked Reines for sending the article to Sandberg but seemed dismayed by a feature of her latest smartphone, writing, "I am quite bereft that I've lost the emoticons from my latest new old berry. Is there any way I can add them?"

On behalf of his charity, the Eastern Congo Initiative, filmmaker and actor Ben Affleck emailed Hillary Clinton about a security report on the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) on April 16, 2012. The report, according to Affleck, "describes a path towards greater security" for the DRC.

Clinton forwarded Affleck's note to Johnnie Carson, her assistant secretary of state for African affairs, writing, "I'd like to respond to Ben Affleck. Pls advise. Thx."

Carson's reply is largely redacted, but he told Clinton that he would have a draft of a response for her later that day.

The next day, Clinton still hadn't received a draft from Carson. She sent him another email saying that she "would like to respond today."

Carson emailed soon after, apologizing for the delay and enclosing his proposed email back to Affleck. The actual response to Affleck has been redacted by the State Department.

Abedin forwarded the email to Clinton, saying that it was a "nice compliment "and that "Lisa is an attractive actress!"
