5 huge bargains on 2016 cars that are being redesigned

This is the season for good deals on new cars as dealers try to clear out 2016 models to make way for the 2017s. And especially big bargains are on offer for cars undergoing a total redesign for 2017 or -- in one case --being discontinued.

With a complete design change, it is harder for dealers to continue to sell the 2016 models alongside the 2017 version. So they are offering especially big discounts on these cars.

Edmunds.com has compiled a list of these cars and the discounts they are offering.

Click ahead for a closer look at five of these entries.

Mercedes-Benz E-Class Sedan

Mercedes-Benz

Even luxury brands like Mercedes resort to discounting at this time of year. And with a sleek new 2017 E-class sedan on the way, buyers can get $7,000 to $10,000 off 2016 list price, according to Edmunds. That MSRP starts at $52,650 -- one of the higher in the class, so this is a good chance to get it at a lower price point if you fancy a Mercedes sedan.

Reviewers surveyed by U.S. News emphasize that the E-class is designed for comfortable cruising rather than sporty performance and handling. They praise an interior with roomy back seats and elegant materials. The standard six-cylinder engine is rated for 20 MPG in city driving and 29 on the highway.

Buick LaCrosse

Buick

Discounts on the LaCrosse are up to $6,200 off list price. That MSRP ranges from $31,065 to $40,675.

Test drivers surveyed by U.S. News rank the LaCrosse second among large cars. LaCrosse comes with some luxury features at less-than-luxury prices. These include a comfortable and quiet ride, separate climate controls for driver and passenger and an infotainment system with an eight-inch touch screen.

The standard V-6 engine in the LaCrosse is rated for 18 MPG in city driving, 28 on the highway.

Cadillac SRX

Cadillac

The SRX is not only being redesigned but renamed, with the 2017 version of this SUV to be called the XT5.

Buyers who like the 2016 can get $8,000 off list price, according to Edmunds.com. That MSRP ranges from $37,605 to $51,730.

Test drivers praise the SRX as having a strong engine and nimble handling and available at a lower price than the competition from BMW and Lexus. The standard V-6 engine is rated for 17 MPG in the city and 24 on the highway.

Hyundai Genesis

Hyundai

Hyundai's luxury model also is getting a new name for 2017 -- the Genesis G80. Edmunds says discounts run from $3,000 to $5,500 off the MSRP that ranges from $38,750 to $53,850.

As the only luxury model of a mainstream brand, Genesis ranks a very creditable fourth of 16 midsize luxury cars among reviewers surveyed by U.S. News. Those test drivers praise its roomy interior, comfortable ride and top safety ratings.

The base V-6 engine is rated for 18 MPG in city driving, 23 on the highway. You also can get a powerful V-8 rated at 15 MPG city, 22 highway.

Chrysler 200

Chrysler

With sales for sedans lagging, Fiat Chrysler Automobiles has decided to discontinue the 200 to open more capacity for very profitable models like its Jeeps.

You can get discounts on the 2016s of $3,000 to $6,000, Edmunds says. The 200 list price runs from $21,995 to $31,785. Reviewers praise the 200 for sleek styling and an upscale interior. The standard four-cylinder engine in the 200 is rated for 23 MPG city, 36 highway.
