With the luxury real estate market on the upswing, A-list movie starts and big-name musicians have been making a lot of moves lately.
A number of unique celebrity-owned homes have hit the market recently, notable for their individual personalities and the unique priorities of being a piece of celebrity real estate. Celebrities have different priorities than the rest of us when it comes to real estate. According to real estate brokerage RedFin, well-known personalities are often looking for luxury, modern properties with landscaping that provides good security and privacy -- and maybe a separate room for dressing.
Of course, that means when it's time for these celebrities to walk away from a home, they face a different set of challenges in the market. High price points, custom amenities and unwanted attention from fans often make homes of the rich and famous difficult to sell. That's partly why many celebrities end up buying from each other.

Singer-songwriter Sheryl Crow isn't having great luck with real estate at the moment. Her Spanish-style hacienda in the Hollywood Hills and her Tennessee horse farm are both currently on the market, both at reduced prices.

Crow's 11-bedroom, 8.5-bathroom, gated Los Angeles estate was listed in January 2013 for nearly $14 million. In April of this year, she relisted it at just under $12 million. The property includes 10.28 acres with three separate homes, a pool and spa, a children's playground and authentic 1920s fixtures.

Crow's 51-acre horse farm in College Grove, Tenn., has been on and off the market since 2010 when it was listed at $7.5 million.

Since 2013, the price has been cut to $3.85 million. It has six bedrooms, 7.5 bathrooms, a mother-in-law suite, a 14-stall horse barn, living quarters for the barn staff and a pool.
Jimmy Kimmel

Late-night talk-show host Jimmy Kimmel is selling his home in the Cahuenga Pass of Los Angeles for just under $2.3 million. Its value has gone up considerably since he bought the property back in 2002 for $925,000. The five-bedroom, five-bathroom house has a clean and classic interior design, but it also has two extra refrigerators that the comedian uses for beer kegs and desserts.

"Orange is the New Black" star Jason Biggs listed his modern home in the Hollywood Hills last week for just under $3 million. The luxury gated property, which is right on Sunset Strip, has three bedrooms, four bathrooms and incredible views of the city and ocean.

Built in 1963, the house is a good example of mid-century architecture, with large windows and geometric lines. It features a spacious terrace, movie screening room, outdoor gym, pool, dog run, fireplace and two-car garage.

Actor Topher Grace, best known for his role as Eric Forman on the TV series "That '70s Show," has listed his single-level Hollywood Hills home for $1.9 million. For the price, the two-bedroom, two-bathroom house is relatively small, but its cul-de-sac near Sunset Plaza is a prime real estate location. Grace bought the property for $1.6 million from "Desperate Housewives" actor Jesse Metcalfe in 2006.

Catherine Zeta-Jones, an actress known for her roles in films like "Traffic" and "Chicago," put her Bedford, N.Y. colonial on the market this month for $8.1 million. She and her husband, actor Michael Douglas, rented the property for several months before they bought it for around $5 million in August 2010. Last year, the couple announced their separation, and Zeta-Jones moved into the six-bedroom, 5.5-bathroom home full- time. Zeta-Jones and Douglas appear to have reconciled, according to Zillow, which could be the reason for the sale.

The property sits on 5.7 acres of land and is surrounded on three sides by a horse farm. The house, which was built in 1938 and retains its period style, has a gym, sauna, separate shoe closet, fireplace, greenhouse, pool and hot tub.

Actress Shirley MacLaine, known for her role as Aurora Greenway in "Terms of Endearment" and many others, consulted psychics before listing her 7,450-acre Abiquiú, N.M. ranch retreat last month. According to The Wall Street Journal, her new-age spiritual advisors told her to list the property for $30 million, but she lowered it to $18 million since "nine [one plus eight] is the number of completion." MacLaine has said she's selling to be closer to Santa Fe and to avoid becoming a "complete recluse."

The recently separated husband and wife pair Taye Diggs and Idina Menzel, both singer-actors best known for their roles in "How Stella Got Her Groove Back" and "Frozen," respectively, listed their Studio City, Calif., home for nearly $3 million last month.

Anderson Cooper

TV news anchor Anderson Cooper listed two parcels on his large vacation property in The Hamptons on New York's Long Island last month. In addition to three separate buildings, the compound includes a small island.
The first is a 3,654-square-foot waterfront cottage with five bedrooms and 5.5 bathrooms, which is priced at $2.6 million.
