Yorba Linda Kid Denied Shot At Climbing Mount Everest

YORBA LINDA (CBSLA.com) — A 12-year-old mountaineer is disappointed after being told he cannot scale the world's tallest mountain.

Tyler Armstrong of Yorba Linda recently learned the Chinese government denied his permit to climb Mount Everest as a new law says no one under the age of 18 can make the ascent.

"A couple weeks ago, we got the news that we weren't going," said the 5-foot-2 record setter who hoped the mountain at 29,000-feet would have been his next conquest.

The journey was planned to help raise money for research for boys with Duchenne muscular dystrophy. Armstrong would have been the youngest person ever to climb it.

"I was really excited to go meet the Duchenne boys," said Armstrong. He's been scaling enormous peaks for boys with the muscle-wasting disease.

Despite this setback, Armstrong's pursuit of Mount Everest is not forgotten, but a bit delayed.

"We're going to go to Australia in the summer and we're also going to do some other mountains like we were thinking about doing the Three Sisters, which is Mount Adams, Mount Rainier, and Mount Hood.

"We're also thinking about doing some other mountains like in Peru so other mountains to help the Chinese think like, 'This kid is ready. We should let him on the mountain.' "
