Pilot Killed In Plane Crash Near Upland

UPLAND (CBSLA.com) — Rescuers combed through the wreckage of a small plane found Tuesday in the hills north of Upland.

The small plane, a Piper PA28, was first reported missing at about 5 a.m. The crash site was found north of San Antonio Heights, on the east side of Mt. San Antonio Dam, according to San Bernardino County sheriff's spokeswoman Jodi Miller.

The plane had apparently taken off from Upland and was headed for Riverside, where the pilot was going to meet with Martin Beylin, who was training the pilot to become a traffic pilot for KNX1070 NEWSRADIO.

Beylin said the pilot, who he identified only as Steve, had significant experience in the cockpit. The pilot never radioed that he was in trouble prior to the crash, investigators said.

The pilot was found dead at the scene, sheriff's officials said. His name was withheld, pending notification of his relatives.
