World Reacts To Isla Vista Stabbing, Shooting Rampage

SANTA BARBARA (CBSLA.com) — As the shocking news of a deadly stabbing and shooting rampage erupted Saturday, officials publicly expressed their condolences for the victims and their families.

California Gov. Jerry Brown said his wife, Anne, and he "were saddened to learn of this senseless tragedy. Our thoughts and prayers go out to those mourning the loss of their loved ones during this difficult time."

UCSB officials released this statement on the Isla Vista tragedy:

"The University is closely monitoring the details that are emerging about the shootings Friday night in the neighboring community of Isla Vista. The UC Police Department is working closely with the Santa Barbara Sheriff's Office in support of the ongoing investigation. We have been notified that several of our students were taken to local hospitals last night, but we do not have additional information at this time. Our hearts and prayers go out to the family and friends of those affected.

"The University has been making counseling services available for students throughout the night and has set up emergency housing for displaced students. The University is also setting up a call center for parents and students with questions."

University of California President Janet Napolitano issued the following statement:

"I am shocked and deeply saddened by the news of a mass shooting last night in the Isla Vista area near UC Santa Barbara. Our thoughts and prayers go out to the victims of this tragedy, their families and the entire Santa Barbara community. I have been in touch with UCSB Chancellor Henry Yang since the news broke, and have told him the UC Office of the President will assist his campus in any way we can.

"While details on the shooting are scarce and families are still being notified, the campus is already taking steps in response. University officials have set up a room for families who are coming to campus, and are making counseling services available to any students, faculty and staff who need our support. UC Santa Barbara officials are also working with the local County Sheriff's Office and have opened the campus' Emergency Operations Center. We will share additional information as it becomes available."

UCSB announced at midday that family and friends who were concerned they may know a victim can call (805) 893-3901 for more informaton. Counselors were made available at (805) 893-4411.

Napolitano said the school has set up a room for arriving families to handle their questions. Grief counselors were made available "to any students, faculty and staff who need our support."

Captain Mark Kelly, co-founder of Americans for Responsible Solutions, expressed his condolences on behalf of himself and his wife, former Rep. Gabrielle Giffords:

"Gabby and I are praying for the victims of last night's horrific tragedy in Isla Vista. Every time we learn of another senseless shooting like this one, our hearts break and we know that no words will bring peace to the families who lost loved ones. Like so many in the Isla Vista community, we are angry and shocked. But we are also grateful to the first responders who acted with such courage last night. We are hoping for strength for those who were injured."

California Attorney General Kamala Harris also issued a statement Saturday.

"On behalf of the California Department of Justice, I extend my heartfelt sympathy to the family and friends of the victims of Friday night's terrible shooting in Isla Vista. Our thoughts and prayers are with all who have been affected by these tragic acts of violence. My office will continue to work with local and federal law enforcement officials to support the ongoing investigation."
