Clerk Shot, Killed At Mid-City Gas Station

LOS ANGELES (CBSLA) — A gas station clerk was shot and killed Tuesday at a Shell gas mini-mart in the Mid-City area of Los Angeles during an apparent robbery, authorities said.

The victim - who was in his 40s or 50s and was initially identified as a woman - died at the scene of the shooting, which was reported about 5:40 a.m. at Venice and Hauser boulevards, a Los Angeles police spokesperson said.

His name was withheld, pending notification of relatives.

"It's not fair. Get out and get a job, get your own money instead of going and robbing people. I'm sorry," a customer said before hugging owner Mazen Elkhoury.

Elkhoury told KCAL9 the man had worked as a clerk at the store for about eight years.

"Nothing else matters, businesswise, other than losing somebody that works for you," he said. "Someone losing their life, someone who could be a father, a husband. There's just no words. I'm really just thinking more about the person who just lost his life this morning."

Police say the man complied with the suspects' demands but was shot anyway. The two suspects were described as men in their 20s. They were seen fleeing in a white four-door Chevrolet Malibu.

Anyone with information on the crime was urged to call LAPD West Bureau homicide detectives at (213) 382-9470.
