Woman Sues McDonald's Over Alleged Burns From Hot Water

LOS ANGELES (CBSLA.com) — A woman is suing McDonald's for negligence after she allegedly suffered second degree burns from a cup of hot water two years ago.

Lynne Gipson filed the suit against McDonald's Restaurants of California Inc. in Los Angeles Superior Court.

In the suit, she claims she was burned on June 2, 2012 at a restaurant in Westchester.

Gipson said she was in the drive-through when an employee gave her a cup of hot water and the lid "popped off, causing the scalding water to spill onto her hand, stomach and lap," the suit states.

The employee apologized, saying the cups were new and were being tried out.

Gipson went to the doctor the following day. She claims she was in pain for several months and her movements were restricted during recuperation, the suit said.

She "still feels sensitivity in the burned areas, which are now scarred," the suit states.

Gipson is seeking unspecified damages.

In 1994, a New Mexico jury awarded $2.86 million to a 79-year-old woman who suffered third-degree burns from spilled coffee at a McDonald's restaurant.
