Who can vote in the 2024 CA primary? What to know about today's election

CBS News Los Angeles

The March 5 Presidential Primary Election is here, and many last-minute voters are wondering who is eligible to vote in the state for 2024.

According to California Secretary of State Shirley N. Weber, all registered voters can vote in the Primary Election in California. To register to vote in the state, you must be a United States citizen, a resident of California and 18 years old or older on Election Day. If you are serving time for a felony in a state or federal prison, you are not eligible to vote.

Those who have been found mentally incompetent to vote by a court, such as those in conservatorships, may also be ineligible to vote today.

On election day, voters can cast their ballots at polling places between 7 a.m. and 8 p.m.

Every registered voter should have received a postcard in the mail with a listing of their neighborhood voting center, but voters can cast their ballot at any location.

A list of polling places should be on your ballot or locations can be found online at https://www.sos.ca.gov/elections/polling-place.

If you are mailing in your ballot instead of voting in person, it must be postmarked by March 5 and received by March 12.

Aside from voting for a presidential candidate, many state and local races and measures are on the ballot. There are also county Board of Supervisors and Superior Court judgeships selections and local city and school board candidates.
