West Covina Councilman Pleads Not Guilty To Misdemeanor DUI Charge

COVINA (CBSLA.com) — A West Covina councilman pleaded not guilty Thursday to drunk driving charges in connection with a crash in June, according to the Los Angeles County District Attorney's Office.

Michael Herman Spence, 50, had an attorney enter his plea Thursday morning to a misdemeanor count of driving under the influence of a drug.

Spence, who was first elected to the West Covina City Council in 2013, allegedly struck a pole with his car on June 12, near Azusa Avenue and Cypress Street in Covina. A Republican, Spence ran for the 55th State Assembly District this year and came in third place in the June 7 primary.

He is scheduled to return to court on Dec. 7 for a pretrial hearing.

If convicted as charged, Spence faces a maximum possible sentence of six months in county jail.
