WB 10 Freeway In Pomona Reopens After Crash Causes Truck To Spill Gravel Load
POMONA (CBSLA.com) — The westbound 10 Freeway was shut down for more than four hours Wednesday morning after a trailer overturned, spilling rocks and gravel across the road.
A crash involving the truck and a black Mitsubishi Eclipse took place around 1:55 a.m. at Towne Avenue, the California Highway Patrol said.
According to officials, the driver of the sedan, 26-year-old Carl Updegraff, lost control of the vehicle, causing the accident.
"As Mr. Updegraff attempted to change lanes to the left, he lost control of his Mitsubishi as it veered toward the center median, subsequently colliding with the center divider wall. The Mitsubishi then continued to veer out of control to the right and collided with the left side of the Mack tractor/trailer," Officer Rodrigo Jimenez said in a statement.
Due to the force of the impact, the truck overturned on its side, spilling its load onto the freeway.
Following the accident, Updegraff exited his car and walked off the freeway to avoid arrest, authorities said.
"He took foot bail when officers arrived on scene and was subsequently arrested on Towne Avenue," Officer Enrique Rodriquez said.
Updegraff was arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence and hit-and-run.
Both drivers were transported to local hospitals with unknown injuries.
The freeway reopened just after 5:50 a.m., officials said.
