Broken Water Main Causes Small Landslide In Newport Beach
NEWPORT BEACH (CBSLA) – A broken water main caused a small landslide that closed a roadway in Newport Beach early Tuesday morning, creating a traffic headache for drivers.
The mudslide occurred before 5 a.m. on Bayside Drive, between Jamboree Road and El Paseo Drive, near the entryway to Balboa Island. A water main broke near a home under construction, blowing a crater in a hillside and sending about a foot-and-a-half of mud onto Bayside Drive, according to Newport Beach police.
There were no injuries or major damage reported. However, local businesses were inconvenienced and one parking lot was flooded.
While crews were working to remove the dirt, Bayside Drive was shut down in both directions. It remained closed as of noon. There was no word on when it would reopen.
