Walmart Workers Hold 24-Hour Thanksgiving Fast & Protest For Better Jobs
LONG BEACH (CBSLA.com) — Walmart workers across Los Angeles were fasting Thursday in a protest for better jobs.
Employees and community leaders began a 24-hour fast at noon outside the Walmart Supercenter in Long Beach.
The fast was representing the hunger Walmart associates and their families endure due to the company's low wages and part time business model.
Hundreds more supporters, including shoppers and concerned taxpayers, will join for a rally at the end of the fast on Black Friday calling for the mega-retailer to pay workers a minimum of $15 an hour and provide consistent, full-time work.
At total of 1,600 strikes are planned at Walmart stores across the nation.
Walmart brings in $16 billion in annual profits, while the majority of employees are paid less than $25,000 a year, according to authorities.
