Walmart employee buys scratcher and wins the lottery after getting called into work on her day off

A Los Angeles woman who got called into work on her day off left as a millionaire that same day, all thanks to a lucky lottery scratcher ticket.

Rebecca Gonzalez wasn't supposed to be on the clock on Sept. 2, but got called into work at Walmart despite already having plans made for the day.

"It was Labor Day," Gonzalez said in a statement via the California Lottery. "They only needed me for three hours. I wanted to obviously be home with my family because we planned to barbecue."

Even so, she answered the phone and showed up to work, unknowing just how valuable that shift would end up being. Gonzalez purchased the Single Double Triple scratcher from the California Lottery kiosk as she left work, becoming an instant millionaire.

She told the lottery that she used her winnings to pay off her debt and close on a new home. Despite the win, she plans to continue working at Walmart.

Up until this week, Gonzalez had only told one person about her win — the manager who asked her to stay late on that holiday shift.
