Vin Scully Turns Down Opportunity To Call The All-Star Game

LOS ANGELES (CBSLA.com) — Hall of Fame announcer Vin Scully, who's retiring at the end of the 2016 MLB season, has decided not to offer his talents at the All-Star Game in San Diego this year.

Brad Zager, executive vice president of production for Fox Sports, approached Scully prior to the Freeway Series with the Angels on May 17 and expressed they would accommodate him however he wished; ranging from calling a certain number of innings to just being a guest in the booth.

"I told him, 'Look, everyone would love to have you as part of the All Star Game'," Zager recalled during an interview with Sports Illustrated. "'Anything you would want to do, we will make it happen'."

While Scully was very appreciative of the offer, he still decided to decline the invitation.

According to Sports Illustrated, Scully expressed he felt it was not his place to be in someone else's broadcast booth, and the last thing he wants is for his presence to overshadow the players in this year's game.

Most would agree it would have been amazing to hear Scully's voice call this year's Mid-Summer Classic -- enlightening the world with his stories and knowledge of the game -- but you ultimately have to respect his decision to take that week off as he nears the end to his historic career.
