Vigil Held For Shot San Bernardino Police Officer Who Remains In Coma

SAN BERNARDINO (CBSLA.com) — An Inland Empire community held a prayer vigil Monday night for a police officer who was shot on the job last week.

Officer Gabriel Garcia remained in a medically induced coma while hundreds filled a baseball stadium, offering prayers for his recovery.

The crowd pointed hands toward the hospital where Garcia, a 31-year-old father of a small child, is in critical condition. He was shot in the head while responding to a disturbance call.

"His family reports there's been some positive news, but by no means is he out of the woods. This is still a process and this is going to be a long road," San Bernardino police Chief Jarrod Burguan said.

During the prayer vigil, people put their hands on officers and prayed for peace in the city and Garcia's recovery.

"We believe that God's going to do miracles. In the Bible, it says if two come in agreement and ask anything in God's name, He'll do it. And we prayed, and we will see a healing in Officer Garcia," community member Robert Cuencas said.

The man suspected of shooting Garcia was fatally shot at the scene by an officer new to the department.
