Vandal Uses Pipe To Break-In, Damage Santa Ana Church; Suspect Arrested

SANTA ANA (CBSLA) – Police Wednesday arrested a Santa Ana man suspected of vandalizing a church using a large metal pipe.

The suspect - later identified as 34-year-old Joel Fabian Sandoval - was caught on video at around 9:15 a.m. Tuesday using the pipe to bash the front doors of the Johnson Chapel African Methodist Episcopal Church in the 1300 block of West 2rd Street, according to Santa Ana police.

The suspect got inside and damaged another set of doors inside the church, police said. He also damaged another outside door and tried to break into a shed behind the church.

Sandoval was taken into custody Wednesday afternoon and booked on felony vandalism and vandalism to a place of worship.

He was initially arrested Tuesday by Santa Ana police in connection with an unrelated act of vandalism, but police said Wednesday he has now been linked to the damage at the church.

Anyone with information on the suspect's identity should call detectives at 714-245-8417.
