NEWPORT BEACH (CBSLA.com) — Authorities Friday were removing an estimate $5 million worth of marijuana plants found growing in the Laguna Wilderness Park.

Up to 4,000 plants, which were in various stages of growth, were discovered in Muddy Canyon, south of the 73 toll road.

"The marijuana eradication effort will require narcotics investigators to hike into the rugged area and manually pull the plants out of the ground," said Lt. Jeff Hallock of the Newport Beach Police Department.

The operation was expected to last between five and six hours.

There was no information about possible suspects. An investigation was ongoing.
