Rideshare Driver Shot, May Have Been Robbed By Passengers
LOS ANGELES (CBSLA) — A rideshare driver was shot overnight Monday in unincorporated Willowbrook, and police are trying to determine if he was robbed by his passengers.
The shooting in the 2600 block of El Segundo Boulevard was reported just after midnight after witnesses saw the Toyota Prius crash. The driver, a Hispanic man in his 20s, was found inside, shot at least once.
He was taken to St. Francis Medical Center in Lynwood in critical condition.
Frank Valdovinos said he was driving by moments after the Prius came to a stop.
"The door was open already, and you could see the guy – his feet were like moving," he said. "The way the driver was in reverse, it looked like he just got robbed."
Two men were seen running away from the car after it crashed. The sheriff's department reports one or both of the suspects shot the victim then ran east on El Segundo Boulevard.
Detectives are investigating if the driver was in the middle of a paying ride and whether the suspects were rideshare customers.
Descriptions of the two men were not available. It is unclear if they were gang members, the sheriff's department said.
Investigators are also looking for security video in the area.
