Iowa Battleship Adding Historic Shells To Its Collection

SAN PEDRO (CBSLA.com) — The Battleship Iowa Museum in San Pedro is getting some authentic additions to its historic collection.

The military is adding 76 huge shells, once fired from the ship's giant guns, on board. The shells have been in storage since the Navy ended its battleship program in the 1990s.

The inert shells were going to be scrapped but preserving them will help tell an important part of the Iowa's story.

The shells could reach targets up to 24 miles away.

The first train-car load of the shells arrived last week from Indiana.

Several railroads donated their services to bring the historic shells to the battleship.
