2 LAPD officers injured in Downtown L.A. pursuit crash

Two Los Angeles Police Department officers were hospitalized after getting injured during a pursuit that ended in a violent crash in the Westlake District early Monday.

The chase began at around 3:30 a.m. and ended a short time later near the intersection of Seventh Street and Union Avenue, according to the department.

They say that the pursuit began after learning of a carjacking suspect who was armed with a rifle. The crime in question reportedly happened on Sunday and involved a the theft of a scooter, police said.

While chasing the suspect, the officers crashed, injuring both. While it hasn't yet been confirmed what they crashed into, video from the scene showed an LAPD patrol car that had come to a stop near a light pole and a parked SUV that had considerable damage to the back end.

Both officers were taken to a hospital in stable condition, the department said. Both suffered injuries considered to be minor.

The suspect, who has not yet been identified, was able to escape without being caught. They were driving a gray Lexus without license plates.

No further information was provided.
