Second round of heavy rain hits SoCal; flood watches in effect

Second round of heavy rain beginning to fall across SoCal

The second wave of an intense rainstorm brought additional flooding concerns to Southern California just hours after Ventura County was doused by a torrential downpour.

With most of the rain settling over northern Los Angeles County and Ventura County during the first round of rain, overnight rain on Friday is expected to head further south towards Orange County and the Inland Empire, possibly picking up in strength along the way.

Rain is expected to taper off by the end of Friday, but flood watches remain in effect for most of SoCal due to the extreme amount of rains in such a small amount of time.

Some parts of the city of Oxnard got around just under 5 inches of rain in a six-hour period, prompting flash flood warnings and evacuations for the area.

The peak rainfall was reported around 4 p.m. on Wednesday, lasting until about 2 a.m. Thursday morning.

The National Weather Service issued the tornado warning at 1:28 a.m. for Oxnard and Ventura after a thunderstorm cell with rotation potential was observed in the area. The warning expired at 2:30 a.m. and no tornado activity was observed.

The following evacuations were issued in Port Hueneme as the heavy rain continued:

EVACUATION ORDER

  • North to Bolker Way
  • South to Channel Islands Boulevard
  • West to Patterson Road
  • East to Triton Street

EVACUATION WARNINGS LIFTED at 8:30 a.m.

  • North to West Hemlock Street
  • South to Bolker Way
  • West to Patterson Road
  • East to Trion Street
Port Hueneme senior community floods due to heavy rain

An evacuation warning will also stay in effect for the Community of Foster Park and Camp Chaffee and some residents in Camarillo that live in the area of Grada Avenue and Trueno Avenue until Friday.

Dozens of homes in the area experienced severe flooding, with extensive cleanup underway before another round of overnight rain is expected early Friday morning.

An evacuation shelter is located at the Oxnard College Gym located at 4000 South Rose Avenue.

A flood watch will be in effect across Los Angeles County until late Thursday night. In Orange County, a flood watch will be in effect Thursday evening through Friday evening.

Most of the roads that were flooded by the storm have since reopened, with the exception of eastbound Oxnard Bouelvard at Statham.
