Teens Kidnapped After High School Prom Fight Off Attacker

VICTORVILLE (CBS/AP) — San Bernardino County authorities say two teens kidnapped following their high school prom fought off their armed attacker and managed to escape.

Officials say the suspect was arrested Saturday when he went to a hospital for treatment of injuries he sustained in the fight with one of his victims.

Investigators say 22-year-old Jared James is accused of forcing the teens into his car in Victorville and driving them to an isolated area. They say the 17-year-old boy fought with James, wrested the gun away and then hit his attacker with it. The gun went off twice, but nobody was hit.

Meanwhile the boy's girlfriend ran away to find help. A truck driver drove the girl back to the scene where they found her boyfriend, then took the couple to St. Mary's Medical Center. The girl was not hurt, but her boyfriend was treated for his injuries and later released.

Authorities say James drove to a relative's house and was later taken to Loma Linda Veteran's Hospital. He was treated for his injuries and arrested on suspicion of kidnapping and attempted murder.

Sheriff's officials say they recovered the gun near the scene of the fight, and the car was located at an address on Seneca Road in Victorville.

Police say James, who is being held on $1 million bail, knows the girl, but didn't say what their relationship is.
