Teenage girl shot twice in Long Beach, in stable condition

A 16-year-old girl was shot on Sunday in Long Beach in the upper and lower part of her body.

The shooting took place at the 1400 block of Magnolia Avenue at around 11:45 a.m. on Sunday.

The girl is hospitalized and is in stable condition, according to the Long Beach Police Department.

CBSLA has learned that the victim was at a car wash that was being held for a family member that recently died.

CBSLA Reporter Laurie Perez went to the scene and found out there was a fundraise going on at the parking lot in which the shooting took place.

Witnesses told Perez that the victim was helping set up for the fundraiser when she got into an argument with a group of people. A short time later, someone opened fire.

Guillermo Ramirez owns the building and parking lot where the shooting took place. He gave the group permission to have the fundraiser there and says he was working next door when he heard seven or eight shots.

"I was not thinking somebody getting shot or something I was thinking maybe it's 4th of July," Ramirez said.

The sign at the fundraiser stated the car wash was for Noel Melendez. We covered the single car accident that killed the 27-year-old on June 23rd when police said his car slammed into a tree off the 710 in Long Beach.

But his sister told Perez that she doesn't know the young victim or who was hosting Sunday's car wash on her brother's behalf.

LBPD believes this was a gang-related shooting.

The name of the victim has not been released.

Detectives found some evidence at the scene, including gun castings. There is no information on the suspect responsible for the shooting.

The investigation is still ongoing.
