Teen Charged With Murder, String Of Convenience Store Robberies After Jail Release

HIGHLAND PARK (CBSLA.com) — A 19-year-old Compton man on probation for two prior convictions will be arraigned on charges he fatally shot a convenience store clerk last month and committed a series of additional armed robberies in December and January.

Rasheen Childs is charged with one count of special circumstance murder during a robbery, 11 counts of second degree robbery, one count of attempted second degree robbery, one count of assault with a deadly weapon and one count of false imprisonment by violence.

According to the Los Angeles County District Attorney's Office, Childs and a second suspect allegedly posed as customers at a 7-Eleven convenience store in the 6100 block of North Figueroa Street at approximately 10:25 p.m. December 22, when he allegedly shot 31-year-old clerk Gonzalo Garcia as he tried to run away.

Garcia was taken to a hospital, where he later died.

The complaint alleges Childs was also involved in robberies occurring on December 19, 20, 22, 27 and 31, 2013 and on January 2, 2014.

Prosecutors said in some cases, there were multiple victims in the stores.

Childs, who was on probation after pleading to a 2013 burglary charge and a 2012 possession of an unregistered, loaded handgun charge, is scheduled to be arraigned January 21.

He is being held without bail. Prosecutors will decide later whether to seek the death penalty.

The second suspect remains at large.
