Tarantino Movie Casting Call For 'Whores' Draws Outrage

LOS ANGELES (CBSLA.com) — A casting call for "whores" to star in a new Quentin Tarantino movie is drawing outrage.

A Los Angeles-based casting agency put up a post, which has since been deleted, started with "Casting Whores for Quentin Tarantino project."

It was seeking applicants with "natural breasts" and asked that they write the word "whore" in the subject line.

Actress Marita de Lara said she was not shocked because offensive casting calls are common.

"What's most shocking to me is how desensitized I am," Lara said. "It does make me take a step back. I have kids. I have a daughter. I wouldn't want my daughter to be going on something like that."

Women and Hollywood called the casting call "not OK" but typical. "This description is actually a typical example of Hollywood sexism, particularly as it pertains to roles for women," according to the group's website.

It did not reveal the name of the casting agency, which told the agency the word "whores" came right from the script, which was written by a woman, the group said.

Casting director and filmmaker Angela Hutchinson said while the wording may be derogatory, she's seen first-hand how it can happen.

"Whoever the casting assistant is basically is looking at the script, and they are quickly typing what was listed in script," Hutchinson said. "It's kind of crazy that the studio or a woman and wouldn't say: you know what? Let's remove that to sexy woman or some other appropriate title for whatever they were looking for."

Others said some casting calls even go beyond gender.

"A lot of casting calls such as like looking for a 'fat slob' or looking for a 'disgusting friend.' I think there's more respectful ways to describe it," one male actor said.
