SUV Hits 3 Pedestrians, 1 Fatally, In Monterey Park

MONTEREY PARK (CBSLA.com) — An SUV hit three pedestrians Friday near a bus stop in Monterey Park, killing one woman and critically injuring two others.

The pedestrians were struck at about 8:10 a.m. on Garfield Avenue near Garvey, Monterey Park Police Department officials said.

The woman died at the scene. Her name was withheld pending notification of her relatives.

The survivors were taken to a hospital for treatment.

All of the victims were believed to be in their late 70s.

Police say the preliminary investigation found that two vehicles had stopped at a driveway to let the pedestrians pass, but the female driver of a third SUV refused to wait and swerved to the right, went up a driveway and onto the sidewalk and plowed into the backs of the three people walking toward the bus stop.

"Based off our preliminary investigation, this does not appear to be any fault of the pedestrians, who were walking on the sidewalk," Monterey Park Police Sgt. Bob Hung said.

The driver whom police say caused the crash is also being treated at a hospital. Police say she did not suffer a medical emergency.

Police told CBS2's Dave Lopez that the victims were struck with such force, they were literally knocked out of their shoes.

Authorities could not say how fast the woman was going but that they saw no evidence of her trying to brake.
