Standoff in Whittier called off after armed suspect evades authorities

Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department deputies, aided by crisis negotiation teams, responded to the scene of a suspect who was said to be armed with a deadly weapon Sunday. 

The incident was first reported at around 2:30 a.m. on Comstock Avenue in Whittier, where the residents of homes in the surrounding area were forced to evacuate from their homes as a precaution. 

Authorities surveying the scene were able to deduce that the suspect was not in fact holed up inside of the residence they expected him to be in, and called all units off scene. 

The residents who were evacuated from their homes were allowed to return without further incident. 

No injuries were reported.
