Suspected Gunman Arrested In Tustin Officer-Involved Shooting

TUSTIN (CBSLA.com) — A suspect possibly carrying a sawed-off shotgun near a Tustin apartment complex Thursday was arrested after an officer-involved shooting.

Authorities received a call around 8:50 a.m. about a suspicious man with a gun walking in an apartment complex in the 1600 block of Nisson Road, police said.

The suspect, later identified as 20-year-old Henry Herrera of Tustin, had the weapon wrapped in a sweatshirt and was confronted by police, Tustin police Chief Charles Celano said.

An officer then opened fire on Herrera, who fled into the complex.

Multiple schools were locked down and residents were asked to stay indoors while the search was underway.

Munawar Rangoonwala said his wife was told to stay inside and lock her doors.

"This is her first experience with something like this, she's just freaked out," he said. "She got a call from the neighbors to stay indoors."

Herrera was arrested around 2 p.m. after a witness spotted him.

"He was found running in a nearby complex. He was observed. As you can see, the helicopters up above and we had tactical teams on the ground and they were able to pinpoint his location and take him into custody," Celano siad

Police were still looking for the suspect's weapon, KCAL9's Tom Wait reported.

Herrera was expected to be booked on suspicion of brandishing a firearm at a police officer and illegal possession of a firearm.
