CBS News Los Angeles

Los Angeles Police Department officers shot and wounded a suspect near Skid Row in downtown Los Angeles Saturday afternoon.

The shooting occurred at 2:14 p.m. Saturday in the 600 block of Towne Avenue, west of South Central Avenue, according to LAPD Officer Drake Madison.

The officers were responding to a report of an assault with a deadly weapon suspect, Madison said. When officers arrived they said they saw that the man was armed with a stick and was threatening employees of a manufacturing business.

Arriving officers encountered the suspect and deployed less-than-lethal munitions prior to shooting him, LAPD said.

Paramedics took the suspect to a hospital, where he died from his injuries, police said.

An officer suffered a small laceration to his hand and was treated at the scene, officials said. It was not immediately clear how the officer was injured.
