Police fatally shoot suspect in front of liquor store in Covina; Second possible suspect detained
Covina Police Department officers shot and killed a man in Covina Saturday evening.
It was not clear what prompted the shooting that occurred in front of a liquor store near the intersection of East Arrow Highway and North San Dimas Avenue around 10:10 p.m. Saturday.
Paramedics transported the suspect to a hospital where he was pronounced dead, according to Sheriff's investigators. No officers were hurt.
Pablo Hernandez, who works nearby, says he heard between five to seven gunshots, and witnessed the aftermath of the shooting.
"[I] saw officers walking up to the suspect and started giving him CPR," he said. "I've seen another suspect being handcuffed so I know there was two but I didn't see anybody else."
Hernandez watched as investigators began marking evidence at the scene, taking note of the several bullet casings, a bottle of alcohol and a few pieces of clothing.
Details about what led to the shooting are still under investigation by Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department detectives, who were contacted to conduct the investigation after learning officers were involved.
Several residents in the area, which is generally considered to be a safe neighborhood, are worried about the recent increase in criminal activities they've noticed.
"Because a lot of the properties are gated, it's a safe community to live in," said Monique Laurent. "But if you are out at night, (or) out alone - i don't recommend it."
According to nearby business owners who spoke with CBS reporters, they have several security cameras installed in around the property, but the one facing the parking lot - where the shooting took place - wasn't working.
No additional injuries were reported in the incident.
