Deputy wounded after gas station shootout in Victorville

A wounded San Bernardino County Sheriff's sergeant killed a suspect after a gas station shootout in Victorville.

The gun battle happened just before 1:45 p.m.outside of the Arco gas station in the 13600 block of Bear Valley Road.

The department said the suspect immediately started shooting at the sergeant upon arrival, who was called to the scene after a woman reported that a man, now identified as her 27-year-old boyfriend Jorge Cardenas, had a gun.

San Bernardino County Sheriff Shannon Dicus said that the woman locked herself inside of the gas station bathroom during the incident and that Cardenas was looking for her at the time of the sergeant's arrival.

The sergeant sustained multiple wounds before returning fire and killing the suspect.

Dicus said that the sergeant, who has been with the department for 16 years, was shot in the leg and shin. Neither wounds are life-threatening and he's expected to make a full recovery.
