Suspect Critical After Being Shot By Police At Boyle Heights Hospital
BOYLE HEIGHTS (CBSLA) – A male suspect was shot and critically wounded by Los Angeles police in a hospital emergency room area Saturday morning in Boyle Heights.
The shooting occurred at Adventist Health White Memorial Hospital, located at 1720 E. Cesar E. Chavez Ave.
On Friday night, the suspect, who was not immediately named, was arrested on felony charges by gang-enforcement officers, LAPD Det. Meghan Aguilar told reporters at a Saturday morning briefing. He was taken to Hollenbeck police station, where he suffered a medical emergency that was not related to his arrest, Aguilar said.
He was then rushed to White Memorial. At about 5 a.m. Saturday, while undergoing a physical examination in a room adjacent to the ER, he got into some sort of physical struggle with two officers.
"During that examination there was a physical altercation which involved two police officers, and that resulted in an officer-involved shooting," Aguilar said. "That individual was struck."
After being shot, he was trushed to the trauma center of a different hospital, where he was in critical condition, Aguilar said.
No one else was hurt. It was unclear exactly how many shots were fired.
White Memorial's ER remained opened following the incident. It was accepting patients and "functioning normally." Aguilar said. The streets around the hospital were also open, although the public could expect some potential traffic delays.
The investigation into the shooting is ongoing. The circumstances of the suspect's initial arrest were not disclosed.
