Man Surrenders After 7-Hour Standoff In South LA

LOS ANGELES (CBSLA) — After hours of trying to coax a man possibly armed with a gun out of his apartment, he finally surrendered peacefully, ending a seven-hour standoff.

LAPD officers were called out to a neighborhood near West 42nd and Budlong in South LA at about 2:30 a.m. Tuesday to investigate a report of shots fired. According to a witness, the man had gone outside, fired shots in the air, then ran back inside the apartment.

After first trying to communicate with the man through a bullhorn, Los Angeles police called in its SWAT team. Several streets in the area were blocked off, and a part of nearby Manual Arts Senior High School remained closed as a precaution.

The man, who was not identified, surrendered to police at about 10:30 a.m. and was taken into custody.

The suspect's family, including children, were able to get out of the apartment before the standoff began. There were no reports of injuries or hostages.
