5 Freeway Crash Kills 1 In Anaheim
ANAHEIM (CBSLA) — One person was killed in a suspected DUI crash involving a big rig on the 5 Freeway in Anaheim, prompting a full closure of all southbound lanes.
The crash was first reported at 2:53 a.m. as a big rig on its side on the southbound 5 Freeway at Euclid Street in Anaheim. The truck was blocking the carpool lane, while a red Toyota sedan was left crushed and unrecognizable a couple of lanes away.
Investigators say the Toyota was speeding when it slammed into a bar on the back of the box truck and went under it. The top of the sedan was sheared off by the impact, which also overturned the box truck.
The passenger in the Toyota was declared dead at the scene. The driver of the truck is OK, in spite of his completely shattered windshield, but the driver of the red car has been hospitalized and is suspected of being under the influence of alcohol, police said.
Besides the debris from the crash scene, crews are also cleaning up the truck's load of fruit that spilled in the collision. A SigAlert was issued for the southbound 5 Freeway just south of Euclid for all lanes for several hours, but most lanes reopened after 7 a.m.
