According to the San Bernardino County Fire Department, the pilot radioed for help at about 8 p.m., stating that he was experiencing engine failure.

The pilot was hoping to land at the airport, but lost contact with the tower and never made it to the runway, authorities said.

The plane crashed just south of the airport, and fire crews were able to rescue the pilot who was taken to the hospital in critical, but stable, condition.

Despite preliminary reports that there might have been a passenger onboard, authorities believe the pilot was the only one in the plane when it crashed.

It was not immediately clear what caused the engine to fail.
