2 Sickened As Inmates Set Numerous Small Fires At Men's Central Jail

LOS ANGELES (CBSLA.com) — Numerous small fires were reported at the Men's Central Jail on Sunday evening, authorities said.

KCAL9's Cristy Fajardo reported that the fires were set during an inmate disturbance that may have included as many as 50 men who stay in individual cells on the third floor of the jail.

Just before 6 p.m., the inmates started setting fire to paper and bed sheets in their cells, according to the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department. Deputies had to secure the area and put the jail on lockdown before firefighters could take care of the blazes.

Two inmates had to be treated for smoke inhalation, authorities said, and a total of 159 had to be moved to other areas of the jail, which is located at 441 E. Bauchet St.
