Slain SWAT Officer Remembered By Mom As 'The Ham In My Sandwich'
POMONA (CBSLA.com) — Slain SWAT officer Shaun Diamond was remembered Wednesday evening for selfless acts, organ donation and for being the type of man who made friends, family and colleagues proud.
KCAL9's Crystal Cruz reported, "You call tell fallen officer Shaun Diamond really meant something to the city of Pomona. Spend a few minutes downtown, and you'll see that, from the blue ribbons on the posts to the marquee on the Fox Theater."
"He was the easiest child to raise; he was the ham in my sandwich, and he was smart," his mother Joy Diamond told KCAL9's Jeff Nguyen.
Diamond's mother got a call Tuesday that her son was shot on the job. He later died at a hospital.
"Shaun loved being SWAT," his mother recalled. "He loved being a policeman. He died doing exactly what he wanted, and he never knew any different because once it hit, he was gone."
Diamond, 45, was a father of two.
His mother proudly donated her sons organs, something he was passionate about.
He gave the gift of life, according to OneLegacy, a donation organization, many years ago.
Tom Mone, OneLegacy's CEO, said Diamond gave his own son a kidney.
According to Mone, Diamond's organs and tissues could help as many as 100 people.
A vigil is planned at the Pomona police station (490 W. Mission, 91766) at 6:30 p.m. Thursday.
