Sinkhole forms in Hacienda Height after water main break

A big cleanup on Tuesday after a water main break resulted in a sinkhole in Hacienda Heights.

"The road caved in and there was a big sinkhole," said Denzil Merrill, a Hacienda Heights resident. "And then it went down the canyon and took out trees. It ran for probably about two hours."

The water was so fierce it caused part of the road to wash away, sending a river of mud into the neighborhood below.

It was reported around 7:30 p.m. Monday on Edgeridge and Tamarix Drives. It was contained by Tuesday morning, but crews spent the day cleaning up mounds of mud.

Merrill said he noticed cracks forming in the road and called the water company several times.

Josh Swift, Vice President of the San Gabriel Valley Water Company, told KCAL News they responded to a separate leak in the neighborhood a few weeks ago. They also came out to Monday night's leak when they got the emergency call.
