City Officials Vow To Make Deadly Intersection In Crenshaw Safer
LOS ANGELES (CBSLA.com) — Councilmember Bernard C. Parks and the Los Angeles Department of Transportation Thursday activated a new signal at a dangerous intersection in Los Angeles.
The project, which was unveiled at 1 p.m. at the corner of 11th Avenue and 48th Street, was prompted by the death of 24-year-old Tiffany Balmore who was killed in a hit-and-run.
Balmore was one of five pedestrians involved in a number of accidents that took place at that intersection between May 2005 and May 2012.
The project is expected to improve pedestrian, vehicle and bicycle safety through the reduction of travel lanes, the addition of bicycle lanes, as well as a two-way left turn lane along 48th Street.
Right-turn pockets will be installed for the North-South approaches on Western Avenue at 48th and Normandie Avenue at 48th. A bicycle connection will also be in place to the future Crenshaw Light Rail Transit system as part of the project.
Parks was responsible for the installation of a new signal at Western Avenue and 37th Place in front of Foshay Learning Center in Nov. 2013, and he also participated in National Walk to School Day in Oct. 2013.
