Sheriff Investigating Possible Hate Crime In Van Nuys After Black Student Is Beaten By Group Of 10-15

VAN NUYS (CBSLA.com)  —   Officials said Friday that an attack against a black male  high school student in Van Nuys is being investigated as a possible hate crime.

The incident took place about 3:30 p.m. Tuesday in the parking lot of the Coldwater Extension of the Los Angeles Valley College.

The student attends classes at Ulysses S. Grant High School, adjacent to the Coldwater Canyon Avenue side of the college at Hatteras Street, according to a crime alert.

"He was physically assaulted by a group of approximately 10-15 suspects, described as Armenian, in the Coldwater Extension Parking Lot," the crime alert said.

"Prior to the assault, the suspects were shouting racial slurs and threats at the victim," the crime alert said. "The victim received serious injuries requiring admission to a hospital."

The crime was reported to the sheriff's department on Thursday.
