Deadly crash in Boyle Heights closes several lanes on 5 Freeway

One person is dead after a three-vehicle crash on the 5 Freeway in Boyle Heights Tuesday morning, causing several southbound lanes to be shutdown.

The crash happened around 2:45 a.m. near Indiana Street and involved two vehicles and one big rig, according to California Highway Patrol.

One of the vehicles appeared to have slammed into a freeway embankment and burst into flames and the second vehicle sustained significant front end damage. 

Video footage from the scene showed the big rig also sustained damage to one side of its trailer. 

A SigAlert was issued by CHP while four lanes were closed to traffic while officers investigated the scene. The cause for the crash remains unknown.

All lanes reopened to traffic around 7 a.m.
