Search For Armed Suspects In Downey Prompts School Lockdown

DOWNEY (CBSLA.com) — Two schools were put on lockdown Friday for about an hour as police searched for possibly armed suspects in Downey.

The search began about 1 p.m. in the area of Brunache Street and Rives Avenue, Downey police Sgt. Maria Viegas said.

Stauffer Middle School and Old River Elementary schools, which are adjacent to each other in the 11900 block of Old River School Road, several blocks from where the search was going on, were placed on precautionary lockdown from 1:20 p.m. to about 2 p.m., said Dr. Robert Jagielski, director of student services with the Downey Unified School District.

There was never any direct threat to the school and students were released in normal fashion, he said.

The status of the suspect search was not immediately clear.
