5 Freeway In Sun Valley Reopens After Fatal Crash
SUN VALLEY (CBSLA.com) — One person was killed in a fiery four-car crash that included a Los Angeles County sheriff's patrol car transporting two inmates, shutting down all lanes of the southbound 5 Freeway at the 170.
The four-vehicle crash happened just after 3 a.m. Friday, sparking a fire where the Golden State and Hollywood freeways meet, according to the California Highway Patrol.
A preliminary investigation shows a disabled SUV was struck by a Honda sedan, which was then struck by a Los Angeles County sheriff's patrol car, which sparked a fire. The two deputies and two inmates in the patrol car suffered minor injuries, as did the driver of a fourth car that became mired in the crash.
The driver of the first SUV was able to get out of it before the chain-reaction crash and was not injured. No information was available about the person who died in the Honda because it burned so severely.
All southbound lanes were shut down for hours while authorities investigated. They were reopened just before 1:30 p.m.
