Army Soldier Found Shot To Death Outside San Bernardino Apartment
SAN BERNARDINO (CBSLA) — A San Bernardino man who was a reservist for the U.S. Army was found shot to death outside an apartment.
Neighbors on Sierra Way near 46th Street say they heard gunfire – six or seven shots in quick succession that sounded like firecrackers – just before 11 p.m. Monday. A short time later, an unfamiliar man was found dead on the ground.
The victim was later identified as 24-year-old Nitesh Kumar of San Bernardino. Kumar's family that came to the scene of the shooting said he had been dropping off a coworker to make sure he got home safe.
"He was always smiling, always happy, super respectful with everybody," Francesca, a friend, said. "He didn't deserve this."
According to his family, it was Kumar's dream to be an army reservist, and though they were initially afraid of him being deployed, they supported his goal.
"I've always been proud of him," his sister Nelam said. "He knows that."
Homicide investigators were seen spending time looking at a neighbor's car that was damaged when a bullet went through a window.
Police said they don't have a description of the shooter or a related car. Anyone with information is asked to call the San Bernardino Sheriff's Department.
