San Bernardino County Sheriff's deputy shot while responding to call in Rancho Cucamonga

San Bernardino Sheriff progressing after being shot by suspect in Rancho Cucamonga

A San Bernardino County Sheriff's deputy was shot in Rancho Cucamonga early Sunday morning.

According to a press release, the shooting occurred at around 12 a.m. on Sycamore Court, after dispatch received a call for service, after residents spotted an unfamiliar car sitting in the area for hours.

The responding deputy was shot twice after coming into contact with the suspect. He is said to be in stable condition.

During a press conference, SBCSD Sheriff Shannon Dicus noted that the deputy is a five-year veteran with the department.

He detailed that when the deputy approached the vehicle and as he asked him for his driver's license and registration, the suspect produced a gun and opened fire on the deputy, firing two shots.

The deputy, whose identity has yet to be released, was able to make a call for backup using his radio. He was transported to Pomona Valley Hospital via helicopter.

"I did have a chance to talk to the deputy and told him how proud I was of him and his response." said Sheriff Dicus during a press conference. "To think about being shot and still being able to put out information to your partners, and ultimately take a dangerous suspect into custody."

The sheriff also noted that contrary to other local law enforcement agencies, San Bernardino County Sheriff's normally respond to incidents with one unit.

The suspect, now identified as 35-year-old Nicholas Campbell, was taken into custody by other SBCSD deputies who located him about a quarter mile away from the scene of the shooting, as he reportedly fled from the area on foot.

According to Sheriff Dicus, the suspect, whose name has been withheld pending the ongoing investigation, was on parole for a carjacking in Northern California, and that he has "an extensive criminal history in the state of California."

Ontario Police Department officers also rushed to the scene for assistance after learning that the deputy was shot.

This is a developing story. Check back for details.
